I've been such a blogging slacker... Engagement sessions, boudoir, weddings and seniors... all backed up and not blogged... YET! All because I didn't think these new sessions were worthy of the old blog. You can find all of the newest, latest, greatest RFP pictures on the new blog in the next few days. I still have some tweaks and little things that need to be fixed, but 95% is ready to go!

A Dream...

When I was young I think I confused the heck out of my Mom. Instead of reading Little House on the Prairie, Goosebumps or other books for kids my age... I had my head buried inside Art Books, and was constantly scouring the discount section at Barnes & Noble for my favorite artist... Monet.

I am now in Kansas City with my friend Rachel, with whom I planned to travel to Europe with to scour Paris and London during our Spring Break in college... which never happened. But, here in Kansas City, she took me to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art yesterday and I finally realized a dream I had held captive in my heart since I was that little girl scouring Art Books... I saw Monet's Waterlilies up close and in person.

Sometimes dreams are realized... just not in the places you thought. My dreams have had to have been re-evaluated this month, and although I'm not where I want to be or where I think I should be... maybe my dreams will be realized in the most unlikely places... like Kansas City instead of Paris.

Krista's Get [Famous] Senior Session!

So I'm leaving for Kansas City in like 30 minutes, and all I can think about is... I have to post these Seniors!! I've known Krista for a few years now... she was a camper when Ryan and I were youth pastors, and we kept crossing paths every year and in between. Now she's turned into someone that I call my friend, and definitely miss being in regular contact with. I was so honored that she let me photograph her, and those FIERCE brown eyes! Okay... off to finish packing! (eeek!)

Joanna & Vernon had an amazingly fabulous wedding... one that I cannot wait to show you. Amanda's Get [Famous] Senior Sesh!

I love facebook. I love meeting new people through facebook and booking sessions... through facebook. Enter Amanda. With fall being so crazy busy here at RFP, when we met and she asked me to do her Senior's it was either Labor Day, September 11th or October 30th... We went with Labor Day (3 days after the consult!). Amanda was so much fun... and I know that this session is her personality to a T! Laid back, fun, romantic... and the off camera laughs? Well, that was my husband holding the light stand off camera. Enjoy!

I love meeting new people! I love meet & greet's, shaking hands and getting to know people. Well, you may have seen me tweet all about The Wow Factor Cake's opening night, and how fabulous Amy's work is. What you didn't know, is that I met CJ from J Major's and she mentioned that she needed prints in her dressing rooms. Well, wouldn't ya know... I just happened to have a J Majors bride, the ultra-fab Christine, and offered to adorn their dressing rooms with her gorgeousness... Enjoy the before & after's!

Adam & Jessica are amazing... we were dreaming of this Get [Engaged] Session from our first meeting. One of the first questions Jess asked me was, "Can we do our engagement session in Charleston?" My answer? "Absolutely!" Jess had everything planned out... the hotel, the locations, the outfits, the shoes, ... down to the jewelry she wore with each outfit. Minus getting a flat tire on the way out of town... this was the best weekend ever. Oh!... and isn't this couple gorgeous?

Jess planned for us to pick up some props during the day...

and we ended with a night shoot at the beach (holla!)...

Matthew & Carrie are both accountants from Raleigh. I was so pleased to get Carrie's phone call this past winter, and book her over the phone! It's amazing when people put that much trust in you. The wedding was full of traditions new and old.

Carrie knew she had to have her reception at Pine Lake Country Club - where all of her childhood memories were made, and where being a "Gilbert Girl" was truly something special.

Chris & Terri Get [Married]!

It was Valentine's Day weekend and Ryan and I were both off... per our normal "off" routine we sat down with our coffee and proceeded to watch Dr. Phil. Yes, Dr. Phil... shhhh! You're going to miss the rest of the story. So ANYWAY, as we were watching Chris & Terri came on stage... and my heart went out. Chris and Terri have been together for 7 years, with no engagement (not for the lack of desire!) and 3 children. One of which was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma at the age of 2. To read more of their story go here.

To make a long story short... Dr. Phil gave Chris & Terri a free wedding. Because of my own battle with cancer I wrote into the show, and offered to photograph their wedding. After many emails, phone calls, a flight and cup of coffee later we finally met... and totally hit it off. I loved this couple... LOVE this couple. Their bravery, perseverance, love and faith in their family will be something I carry with me always. Chris and Terri... I'll see you guys in a month back in Kansas City! We need to grab dinner!

It was a hot, hot, hot day. But Josh and Sarah were getting married today. The programs were printed, the Tux's all fit and Sarah's shoes... well, I'll just let you look for yourself. The sky was a vision of azure blue and puffy white clouds, and I couldn't stop dragging the bridal party out into the heat to capture the canvas of colors. Hope you enjoy!

I met Rachel at Life Pacific College during my short stint in California. Neither one of us quite remember how we met, but we hit it off and were pretty much inseparable after she got me hooked on Friends. 3 years after graduation she has Bryan. I was so privileged and honored to be asked to shoot their wedding in October, as well as their engagement session while I was in Kansas City last month. Check out the picture Rachel painted for their wedding! Hold on tight ya'll... this session was rockin' and the light was amazing!

Kirk & Lisa are an amazing couple. They keep each other balanced, and bring out the best in each other. I don't think I've met a couple that's more even keeled than these two. Lisa and Kirk met at NC State and planned their wedding in Lisa's hometown (Charlotte) from Raleigh! I love working with out of town couple's and making their day amazing!

Cayleb and Jayden were 12 day old identical twin boys when I had the opportunity to shoot their first few days in the world. There was nothing fancy about this session, not many props, not many pictures... but so much love. Megan (their Mom) is a true inspiration... a single mom, working hard, and pouring her heart, soul and life into making these boys lives amazing. Their life is already amazing because they have her as their Mom. Megan is just one of those people that brings light wherever she goes... I can't help but hug her and smile every time I get the chance to see her. Thank you for letting me share these special moments with you, girl. You're doing an amazing job... keep it up.

Ashley & Dallin were one of those couple's that signed before they had a date... or a venue... or a city. We kept emailing each other back and forth updating available dates, places, and locations. It was February when I got the email saying, "We landed on a date and place, are you open?" I would have moved heaven and earth to shoot this wedding, and the sunrise session that followed. Blaik is one of my all time favorite people. We were in the same youth group, went to the same college and now attend the same church. We've always been in close proximity to each other. Blaik met Bo at that same college, and they started dating shortly thereafter. Like most freshman romances, it ended... but not for long. Bo could never get Blaik out of his head, and they eventually circled back around to each other. Sometimes the best relationships just need a some breathing room. Bo & Blaik's wedding is being shot by the fabulous Shyla, and then Bo is taking Blaik out of that nice proximity to San Diego... But alas, when you're in love you go where it calls you.

Ninette & Tony were absolutely fabulous to work with. They forewarned me at the consult that their wedding would be very Italian... and very loud. It lived up to both. I had so much fun getting to know these two and helping them out with the fun aspects of pulling off a wedding in 5 months!

The reception was filled with old Italian love songs, steeped in old country tradition and saturated with love from their friends and family. Congrats you two... all my love.

Ah the French... they know how to cook, they know how to live, and they know how to love. Chris & Christine were such a rockstar couple to shoot, and I'm so sad that Chris has gotten his orders and taken the beautiful Christine before I could shoot her again. But at least they gave me 2 hours between the ceremony and reception for just pictures with the two of them... oh the magic that ensued!

This wedding was unique. There were only 17 people on the guest list, and I was one of them. This was a small wedding done right, and the family members that were in attendance knew they were loved and cared about... they were the inner circle. And forgive the long blog post (I need to catch up). Oh! And how much does Christine look like Lara Flynn Boyle? Gorgeous!

I met Jeff and Mandy in the early part of this year... as their wedding day unfolded before my eyes I was secretly praying for they would sign on the spot... and my prayers were answered.

Jeff and Mandy have a semi long distance relationship. Jeff flies back and forth from Charlotte to Pittsburgh for his job, while Mandy stays in Pittsburgh planning and working... so you can only imagine the difficulty we had in finding a time that worked for their [Engaged] session!

When I was going through picking out my favorites (and absolute favorites) from their session I just couldn't stop I was like... oh, I like this one, and this one, and this one.... and THIS ONE! So... here we go... enjoy!

Brandon & Lee Get [Married]! (Part 2)

So... this is going to be a long post. If you thought Brandon & Lee's ceremony was amazing, check out their reception! With a sorority/fraternity reception, this was just one big party. Everything was eventful from the cake cutting to the bouquet toss to the serenades. I hope you enjoy these as much as I did... this wedding was truly epic. And I'm sad to the point where I'm sad it's over, and Lee and I have to find more excuses to get together.

So Lee and Brandon had a caricaturist... and the line was half a mile long the whole night.

One of the things I love most about Lee is her expressions... she just can't hide anything...

Lee and Brandon met at Western Carolina University. She was an Alpha Gamma Delta he was a Phi Mu Alpha. Through the language of the Greek's they began their love affair, and I'm guessing the day after Brandon proposed (possibly before) Lee was already planning her dream wedding. I had never met Lee, but my friend Steph is an Alpha Gam... and through the bonds of sisterhood, Lee hired me sight unseen until their engagement session at The Biltmore (check it out here). We all immediately hit it off, and from there it was just a long wait until the next Spring.

This is why I love my job... couple's like Susan and Richard make my day. Every. Day. They're one of those couples that know who they are apart, and even more who they are together. They balance each other out, take each other's advice, and genuinely care about what the other thinks about, cares about and does. Their love is deep seated, because they were alone long enough to know what treasure's they found in each other. Their day, was a great day. Enjoy the eye candy!

We were taking pictures of Susan's jewelry when her parent's popped out Richard's wedding gift for Susan... a pair of diamond and pearl earrings, that matched her grandmother's necklace perfectly.

Richard's gift from Susan came in a box that we all know and adore... only the best cuff links for this groom.

Carrie is a vivacious soul. Friendly to a fault and thirsty for life. Her attitude is infectious, and so is her laugh. Greg is her rock. Greg is even tempered, laid back and steady. He's the one holding the kite string that lets Carrie fly. These two were amazing to get to know over the past year, and share in their day.

I cannot thank Dawn Roof or Carlos Melendez enough in their help to pull their wedding day off. You guys were amazing.

Matt & Carrie Get Engaged!

Carrie was the brand new associate on the floor. There was the usual interoffice dating policy, but Matt just couldn't help himself. There romance began quietly, and then sprang into love... and with Matt being a partner it was up to Carrie to find a new job. Which she did, and now they're getting married next month.

A Father's Love...

My Dad and I have always been close... he was always the one I went to when I had problems, always the one that talked me out of the deep end, always the one with the solid advice. It is today that I am reminded of how grateful I am for that friendship. It was a very hard thing for me to leave my parent's house and join the one of my husband's.... there wouldn't be anymore breakfast's around the kitchen table, no more early morning coffee when just Dad and the dog were up, no more eggs at 1am.

But something has evolved in this phase of my life... a deep gratitude and appreciation. My Dad is a selfless man, a man with a huge heart and deep conviction. A man that would give anything for his family, and a resolve to protect them against all odds. He is never without a hug, coming or going - which is probably why I hug so much. He's never without time for the important things - which is probably why all my meetings go long. He's never without a sound word in a time when I need it most - something I may never have, but consistently try. He is my hero.

Dad, while I can't be with you on this all important day to show you my gratitude, appreciation and love; you know my heart is there. I owe much of my common sense and strong convictions to you. Thank you for always being patient, taking the time for what was important, and being as always... an example of what a Dad should be... an example of what our Heavenly Father is. I love you.

Joe & Ashley Get Married! (Part 1)

It was a luscious spring day, typical May in North Carolina, and the sun was shining brightly to light the way to Joe & Ashley's wedding. All of the details were carefully prepared, the bows neatly tied, the flowers pristine and the pews adorned - all for this day. Nothing makes me happier than to see two people in love, and there was no shortage of love or commitment on this day... not between these two. I firmly believe that where there is deep love between parents & their child, the marriage is beginning on a strong foundation... and this foundation is made of titanium. Enjoy!

Keith & Amy Get Married! (part 1)

It was May 1st, and clouds were covering the horizon... My first thought? "Oh God no, not today..." (which is my thought any Saturday that I have a wedding and there's cloud cover). But as Amy was getting the finishing touches on her makeup, the clouds parted and the sun shone brightly throughout the day.

Keith & Amy were such a delight and wonderment to capture. Every detail was carefully executed, and you could tell they were well loved... everyone wanted a piece of them at their reception. I could explain more, but their pictures are worth a million words - not just a thousand.

Sheri & Chris Get Married! (part 2)

And without further ado... part 2...

The sky opened up in the middle of Sheri & Chris' ceremony, and it didn't quit. I didn't want to drag the entire bridal party out in the rain, but I knew there were shots that HAD to be taken. Sheri's response? "What's a little rain? It's not that bad! What if you, me and Chris just went?" And so we did... so glad the equipment is weather proof!

And after the dancing had subsided, and the rain decided to give us a break...

The rain was looming overhead and clouds were slowly descending, but nothing was going to put a damper on this wedding day. Sheri & Chris were getting married, and all the rain in the world couldn't keep them from walking down the aisle as man and wife.

If you've been keeping up with me on Twitter, you know that Sheri was in my high school art class! She doesn't know this until now, but she was the one reason I looked forward to coming to that class. I loved sitting at her table and listening to her stories while we worked. We lived in the same neighborhood, and she babysat the boys that used to live in the house we did before my family moved in! One more coincidence... I used to work with Chris' dad, Stan, at PCA way back in the day. It took me all of 15 minutes to put it together. Bottom line... I was meant to shoot this wedding. And now, our houses are 5 minutes apart (coincidence? I think not.).

Sheri & Chris,

You are two of the most precious and heart warming people I've come to know. I feel so privileged to be a part of your day, and catch the moments in the rain that only the 3 of us shared. I hope that there's not another 10 years between us seeing each other again, we're just too close for that to happen.

So... I have this amazing friend. And this amazing friend has amazingly beautiful children. This amazing friend is also LEAVING me in June, and I still can't believe it. Melinda and I met at Starbucks many moons ago, before photography took over my life. Her and Chris opened up their home to my husband and gave him a place to live before we were married, we were shift supervisors together; and we spent every Monday night hanging out, eating oreo's or sucking down Sonic's strawberry limeaide's.

Before I left for Vegas I brought my camera over to her house, and just captured her and her husband with their kids. I am going to miss them terribly, and hope we remain close through the distance.

So, I have this pet peeve... and I'm seriously considering not meeting anymore clients at a Starbucks again... ever. While I was traveling this week I was stuck in 2 airports, and an airline that all charged for WiFi! So over the course of 10 hours I was going to have to pay $15 to use the internet. Fail. Epic fail. Oh Internet, why do some people think they can make money off of you when Time Warner is already sucking my life away? So here goes the 2nd edition of Rants & Raves...

Rants...

- Moving!!! (More on that later... and btw, where's that box of jackets?)

- Random Generators... I lose any contest left up to a random generator (sigh)
- Charging for WiFi that you're getting at a set price and making bajillions (why didn't I think of that?)

So I was out for dinner with my sister (@bethanycg) and my husband (@ryanfesko)... I only include their twitlinks because they're usually hilarious when there's banter going across the airwaves, and you have to follow both of them to see the hilariousness. Some of the hilarity ensued at dinner the other night over a well known workout video.

So... we're out for dinner, and Beth mentions that she just bought p90x.
"Who did you buy it from?" Ryan asked.
"Some old guy. Said his wife saw it on television and thought it looked interesting. When she actually got it she said there was no way..."
"Yah, there's a big difference between OWNING it and actually DOING it!" Ryan said.
"Yeah, my sister owns p90x and she'll kick your butt!" Beth said.
(Beth in a different voice) "You don't oooooowwwwnnnnn p90x, look at you! ... (different voice) "No, no, no... I said I OWN p90x."
"How long have you OWNED it? (Beth again)... "1 day."
"I can imagine his wife sitting on the couch with a bag of lays, 'He just told me I did a good job! How does he know?'... I don't know where to even FIND a pull-up bar." Beth said.
"They sell them at Wal-Mart. Hey! Do you want ours? We're not using it. (to Ryan) Why do we have a pull-up bar again?" I said (this was through tears at this point).
Beth: "How long have you been on day 1?" (different voice) "Two weeks!"
"Yeah... I can tell!" Ryan said. "When I emailed him I would have asked if I could see HIS before and after pictures! TV is one thing, I want to see YOURS!"

In this conversation we determined 2 things...
1. Once you can't lift your own body weight (via the p90x pull up bar), you are officially overweight.
2. If for you, bootcamp = love, p90x is the workout program for you!

And maybe this conversation was only hilarious to us, maybe you had to be there. Maybe you own p90x, and you just needed some encouragement or a workout from the laughter. In any case... we're here for you.

Amy's Model Sesh

Top 10 Reasons You Know You're in California...

So I've been in California for about a week now, and I honestly forgot how much I missed this place. My hubby and I met in SoCal, and I guess I just fell in love with him right along with the 75 degree weather, destroyed jeans and flip flops. I can't help it... I think I'm a California girl at heart. The best part of SoCal is getting to see all of my amazing friends that are putting up with me... I mean putting me up... while I'm here :). Note: If you find friends that you can meet up with after hardly being in contact for years, and you pick up right where you left off... these are friends for life - keep them.

So after being in CA, I realized that not everyone knows what this amazing experience is like... so I decided to take it upon my self to tell you... (and some of these were taken with my blackberry... so no judging!). Here we go...

WPPI

This was my first experience at the world's largest photography conference... also known as WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International). I remember listening to one of the speakers when he said when that at WPPI you can be surrounded by people, but feel entirely alone. I think I spent most of the first day in tears... all of the photographers I tried talking to snubbed me, I couldn't find anyone to eat lunch with, and the party the night before was not all it was cracked up to be.

Something I realized is that although I may have my stuff together, it is nothing compared to what some of these photographers are doing. I listened to people like Scott & Adina Hayne, Jasmine Star (who is exactly like she is on her blog), Jared Bauman and Mike Colon (who is seriously the most real, honest and down to earth person I heard). I became inspired. I found ways to better myself and my business. I found friends. I was stranded in Las Vegas and the Shootsac crew selflessly gave me a ride into California... and seriously, if you're a photographer and you don't have a Shootsac, you need one.

Lastly, I reinvented myself. I took a lighting class from Kevin Jairaj... and, I could tell you what I learned, but I would rather show you...

Timm & Shannon's (impromptu) E-Sesh!

On this last day of February I thought I would leave you with something special...

Have you ever met those people that immediately put you at ease, and you realize almost seamlessly that you can be your absolute self around them? Enter Timm & Shannon.

Timm and I met a few months back while shooting a wedding last season. While we were putting details together for a project we've combined forces on, he mentioned that he was proposing to Shannon at the Biltmore (see that story here). Timm's opinion was that after he was done proposing I could take them anywhere, and shoot them on the grounds (yay!). Timm and Shannon are definitely in love, and definitely know how to have fun (as you can see!). They are genuine, caring, open and honest. It was such a pleasure getting to be apart of this special moment... as well as the tears, laughter, snowball fight and snow angels that followed... Congrats you two.

Oh riiiiiiight... I mentioned a snowball fight didn't I?

Welcome to the first edition of Rants and Raves! This is my own personal place to give a thumbs up (or down :) on everything wedding, photography, life, tv, shoes, fashion, myself... a place to breathe. So... here we go...

I don't claim to be a marketing or SEO expert, I do however have a knack for those things and feel that I need to share a little of my insights. As a photographer I check out other photographer's websites, blogs and the sites that my friends of Facebook have become "fans" of. I am surprised more and more by what people call quality. Your blog and website is where the "best of your best" should be featured, not a place where your barely edited, unfocused, formal pictures are displayed from the 1 couple that just hired you. Building a portfolio takes time. Don't rush in and force that proverbial "foot in the door." The door will open to you when it's time. In the meantime, work on your craft... read, ask for critique, second shoot and ask all the questions you can!

With the economy recovering from its nosedive, there have been many people that have started to call themselves "photographers" because they own a "good camera" or have a "good eye." Being a photographer is so much more than that... You should be able to shoot in a dark hallway without your subjects coming out looking like the paparazzi captured them. You should be able to edit your pictures in a way that makes them look like they didn't just come out of a point and shoot camera. You should be able to design or hire a graphic designer that will put together a brand and plan for your business. You should be registered with your county and state and be paying taxes. You should be able to attend conferences, read everything you can get your hands on, take classes and attend workshops that will better YOU in your field. You should be able to do what you do better than anyone else... Own. YOUR. Market. If you need help in this area reach out! I'm available, there are also other more long standing photogs/people that can help... Kelly Moore, The Brand Camp, Into the Darkroom, Lara Casey and many, many, many more.

Brides, when you hire a photographer don't settle on them because they are discounted. Honestly, I would rather own a Calvin Klein dress that is more expensive, but will last longer and be higher quality than I would buy a Wal-Mart dress that is just going to fall apart and not fit right. Why would the photography for the MOST important day of your life be any different? After the cake is cut, the flowers have died and your dress has been cleaned... the only thing you have left are your pictures (and/or video). Why wouldn't you invest as much as you possibly could into the only thing you have left after everything else is gone? These are memories that are going to last you a lifetime, why wouldn't you start those memories out like you want to finish?

My husband and I wanted the best quality pictures we could afford. We found the photographer we wanted, flew her in from California, and spent more than we wanted to... but I LOVE my wedding pictures, and have no regrets. I look at them often and have nothing but great things to say about her and the day. We INVESTED in our photographer, and spent more on something we wanted because we knew it was going to last longer. And we have more than a great return on our investment... we have memories that make us smile every time we open our album. (Just an FYI... our Photog was the fabulous Shyla, and we're forever grateful love!)

To me it's a matter of proportion... On AVERAGE You spend $700 on a cake that's going to last you 1 day, $1500 on a dress, $500 on favors... but you're wanting to hire a photographer for $1000 and HOPE to get the lifelong, timeless quality you see in all those wedding magazines you've been spending the last few years perusing. I'm afraid not. Those photographers that have had their work featured in The Knot, Style Me Pretty and Southern Weddings have poured their entire life into what they're doing. They've refined their craft and made it their own. For us, photography isn't just something we do on the weekends... it's our life (just ask my husband). We've poured our heart and soul into something we LOVE doing, why wouldn't we want our craft to be appreciated and charge accordingly? We're not discount dresses at WalMart... we're the Calvin Klein's. Don't be afraid to INVEST... because that's what it is... an investment in your memories.

Timm & Shannon's ACTUAL Engagement!

Timm & I met almost 6 months ago at a wedding we were shooting together. Timm is owner and chief editor for Studio 74 Productions as well as all around nice guy... (and bride's, if you're looking for a videographer you need to check out his work).

A few weeks ago Timm & I were laying out plans for a future project, and somehow we got on the subject of him proposing to Shannon (his wonderful girlfriend) in the near future. He said he was proposing at the Biltmore on Valentine's Day weekend, so we started laying out a time and place for the proposal to happen. Knowing that he's working with me on this project pro-bono, I offered to catch the proposal on camera to trade services. The plan was to get there, hide, text message Timm & wait for him and Shannon to arrive...

I arrived on the Biltmore Estate 45 minutes early, and started making my way to the "place" only to go down the stairs and discover Timm & Shannon walking IN FRONT OF ME! (P A N I C!!!!!) I didn't even have time to text message Timm and tell him that I wanted to him to align perpendicular to me rather than in line (with his back to me). So I rushed down the stairs, threw on a lens and turned around just in time to catch him down on one knee.

So I'd like to say that THIS was the proposal...

Congratulations & Happy Valentine's Day you two!

Kimberly & Zach Engaged!

I believe that there's been 1 day in the past 2 weeks where the sun has been shining on the weekend, and it was only out for a few hours! Luckily, that was the weekend, and those were the hours that Kimberly & Zach had planned to be in town for their engagement session!

Kimberly has to be one of the sweetest people I've ever met. She's so genuine in her words and so sweet towards everyone... I wish everyone could be like Kim. Zach is just hilarious... he kept cracking jokes and every time I would pose them Zach would poke or tickle or do SOMETHING to make Kimberly laugh... The two of them together are such a great match, and I had so much fun getting to know them as a couple.

There was one time that I was trying to show them how to walk across the street, and because I'm a touchy feely person I acted out with Zach how I wanted them to hold hands and walk... Zach being a newbie (because most couples are!) actually held my hand... and tried to interlock fingers... lol. I immediately started laughing, and told Kim what was going on. It took us a good couple minutes to get things back together. I hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoyed taking them!

Hi! My name is Bethany and I'm from Charlotte, North Carolina. I graduated in '07 from Hickory Grove Baptist Christian School. I am still dating my high school sweetheart of 4.5 years, and I view love as our own fairy tale. I believe in better than the movies type of love because it's REAL and want to capture that through my lens. I laugh a lot & encourage goofiness & being yourself. Creativity is what I hope everyone finds in themselves & push to incorporate that in every aspect of life (as well as fashion!!). I go to school at the Art Institute of Charlotte for Fashion Marketing & Management. I have one older sister named Brittany and the most amazing parents in the world. In my spare time you can find me singing, scrapbooking, planning events, hanging out with friends, playing tennis, and just being adventurous. I am a naturally lit portrait photographer based in Charlotte. I eventually want to incorporate event planning into my career as well.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Stacy & Nathan's Wedding! Part 1

So, I thought I was done for the season... and while I wasn't necessarily looking forward to having a few months off, I did need some down time to send my equipment in for some routine maintenance.

Stacy's sister-in-law, Elizabeth, contact me about two weeks before Christmas and told me about Stacy and Nathan's hope to find a photographer for their wedding in January. "In January!?" I said. In January.

I was able to meet Stacy and Nathan before they headed back to Wilmington, and talk through their life as well as the details of their ultimately fabulous day.

Stacy has a deep appreciation of old world vintage, and Nathan is an internet strategist extraordinaire. To hear how they met, how they've changed for the better since they met each other, the deep affirmation of love and heartfelt care that they have for each other, and the strength of relationship and reputation that they have among their family and friends was beyond words. I teared up more than once during this wedding... and the creativity I was allowed to roam and use the space was so liberating!

Stacy & Nathan,
You both have blessed my life beyond words. The purity of your love and the strength of your resolve to do the things in your life with excellence and virtue is a high and worthy calling. I know you two are fit for the course, and ready for the journey... and I'm so elated that you'll be traveling together.

Shanti & Patrick's Wedding! (the best New Years Eve ever!)

So it was many moons ago when Shanti & Patrick met back at App State. A six week relationship didn't really turn into much back then, but it was something that neither one of them could forget... her unforgettable smile, his smart comments and the good conversations they shared. Seven years later Shanti finally called Patrick and they met up for coffee... coffee turned into dates, the dates turned into a relationship, and the relationship blossomed into romance. Finally, they were together.

A New Years Eve wedding, how fitting... to walk into a New Year, a new season and a new life... together. Shanti and Patrick were married at Grace Covenant Church, with a reception following at Birkdale Golf Club. Did I mention that she was serenaded by the very classy, the very chivalrous, the most respected Phi Mu Alpha? And I only give them the highest level of respect, because well... My husband just happens to be a Sinfonian... and once a Sinfonian, always a Sinfonian.

My dears... I wish you both a lifetime of happiness and love with each other. I hope that through the times in your lives you always find yourselves together and in love... All the best to you.

Susan & Richard Engaged!

Or as I like to call it... A bicycle built for 2! So, since the business is my baby... I bought my business a bike for Christmas (and that rhymes!!). Let me back up...

I met Susan and Richard over Starbucks one evening, and fell in love with their love for each other. They're the kind of couple that have enough life experience to know what they want... and they chose each other... (so happy!).

Susan has to be one of the happiest and more creative bride's that I've met. She seriously had the vision for her engagement session all laid out, and just needed to find someone to help her vision become reality... Enter Rachel! As soon as I left our meeting I found a the props they needed to pull it off and prayed they would book me... 2 weeks later they did!! Enjoy the pics from our mini e-sesh!

New Years Resolutions... like a good procrastinator... I'm late.

Life is funny sometimes. It doesn't always go the way you planned, and you don't always plan the things that happen to you. My mother always told me that we are all running a race, but if you look to see where other people are in their race then you go off track of yours. Any good runner knows that you stay focused on the goal line... not the people beside you.

My motto in life has been, "That's not fair!" Because I have justice issues... I just intrinsically know what's right and wrong, and if someone has done me or someone I know "wrong"... it's on. I know... little harsh, right?

So here's a "not fair" Rachel Fesko story... are you ready? When I was 22 I decided to go back to college... in California. I left January of 2005, and LOVED it... Cali in January? And I could wear flip-flops? I was in L O V E. At the end of the semester amidst all the packing and finals, I felt that something was wrong with my body... I couldn't concentrate, my hair was falling out (I wasn't pulling it out... it was f a l l i n g out!), I couldn't sleep, and in the middle of it all... I came down with a sinus infection. Not good for a college student. So what does every good college student do when things fall apart? Call home.

God bless my dad... After getting off the phone with me he made a doctor's appointment. Which I kicked and screamed all the way to... I didn't need to go to no stinkin' doctor! I've got a good immune system! I'll kick this! I just need to rest. Through a series of events, which I won't bore you with, that doctor's appointment led to me being diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer.

Because I was done this great wrong, there had to be someone to blame... because this just wasn't fair. I mean, why me? What did I do wrong?

What I didn't realize until this year was that I have still been carrying around that i n j u s t i c e, and I've been trying to play it off like everything was fine... when it really wasn't. All I could see was the bad... instead of the good.

Good Stuff:
* I have a clean bill of health, and have had one for 4 years
* I had the best surgeon and staff helping me through the process, who I can still call at anytime
* I returned to school that next semester (4 weeks after surgery) and made the Dean's List
* I realized who my closest friends were... and ended up marrying one of them
* I'm alive

I can't keep looking at all the injustice in my life and be happy. I can't keep demanding my way, and be happy... I can't keep on fighting when I've already won, and be happy. My New Year's Resolution is plain and simple...

*Be the most true expression of who I've been created to be*

And that person is happy... full of life... sanguine... hopeful... creative... spontaneous... and loves life. Here's to a year full of life... and life worth living.

Crystal & Ian's Wedding!

You may remember Crystal & Ian from their fabulous e-sesh! They were such an amazing couple to get to know and have the opportunity to photograph. Their ceremony & vows were so heartfelt and genuine, and seeing their expressions of love between each other absolutely melted me.

When I asked Crystal what the vision for her wedding was, the resounding theme was "pink." Pink flowers, pink table cloths, pink candy table, pink ties... at one point Crystal sent one of her bridesmaids out to get "pinker" ties because the ones they rented weren't pink enough! Love it!

I had a hard time narrowing down my favorites for this one... so an extra long post is just going to have to do! Enjoy!

I love my family... I really do. So when I got a phone call from my little brother telling me that he'd just proposed, the first thing out of my mouth was "Congratulations!!!" the second thing was "I'm SO shooting your engagement pics!"

Megan is Andrew's adorable little firecracker of a finace, and believe it or not, had never owned a hair dryer up until this shoot. Thanks to my sister Beth and my best friend Dani we dolled her up, and sent her on her way (you may remember Dani from my website... she's the gorgeous blonde by the big oak tree in the "true love" section).

I love these guys! They were romantic, fun, and let me try out any ideas that popped into my head... even standing in traffic. Welcome to the family Meg! Hope the rest of you enjoy!

Joanna & Vernon's E-Sesh!

Joanna & Vernon were my J. Crew couple of the year (or Banana Republic as Joanna prefers). I met Joanna and Vernon over dinner one night at Mac's, and we all totally clicked. When we met they wanted to have a honeymoon in Greece, and get married in Charlotte... then they wanted to get married in Greece... and now they're getting married in Charlotte (and the honeymoon is still undetermined). Joanna made the decision to sign a contract without having wedding date or location set yet! I was so honored to have such a high priority on her list!

Joanna and Vernon had the first half of their engagement session captured at Vernon's grandparent's house, and the second half in Uptown. These two were amazingly romantic and cute with each other! They were adventurous, spunky, sexy and utterly amazing! ... Check out a sneak peak of their session... (oh, and that adorable dog? That would be Gemma... she tackled me at least twice during our session!)

... and of course... my favorite... I know it's not of the two of them, but c'mon!
This needs to be in J. Crew or Banana... Or like Vernon said,

It was a cold, cold day in the middle of October and I was lost... very lost. Lemme tell ya... GPS had it wrong folks... I could not find this location, and I was running out of gas... AND I had forgotten the bride's cell number at home! Not good. So I called my husband, panicked... and then saw the sign... Villa Franca Estate Wedding (followed by an arrow)... I hung my head. If I had just kept driving instead of freaking out and wondering if I had gone too far everything would have been okay... sigh. Luckily when I got there Heather hadn't even started getting ready, and I had 5 hours until the ceremony started for pictures (yay!). ... Okay, enough about me... Let's roll back a few months...

I had my website up for all of a week, and I got a call from Heather...

"Is this Rachel Fesko?"

"Yes, it is!"

"I'm getting married in October, and I saw that you still had my date available... can you send me a contract?"

"Uh... Sure! Would you like to get together for coffee or dinner to get to know each other?"

"No, that's fine. We can do that later."

So about 5 months later we met, and I finally was able to speak to Justin! It was about a month later that I received another phone call from Heather...

"Hey Rachel... they double booked my date, and I have to move my wedding..."

... gasp...

Because I have the most amazing clients ever... the bride that had scheduled to have her bridals taken on the day of Heather's new date was able to move her appointments so that I could shoot Heather & Justin' wedding!

I absolutely loved being apart of this wedding day, and apart of the family. This day was full of adventures, cold hands, and warm hearts... And the quickest outdoor ceremony that I've ever been apart of... Congrats you two... many happy memories to come.

Tai & Heyward's E-Sesh!

I met Tai back in April through Crystal (you may remember her and Ian's E-Sesh... and their fabulous wedding is up & coming!). Tai and I laughed through most of our meeting, and she was one of the few clients I knew was a lock after we talked. When I asked her what she was envisioning for her engagement session, she immediately mentioned her son Cameron...

He was only with us for a few shots... but what a cutie, huh?!

And let's not forget the eversohandsome Heyward.... who I had just met, and who totally rocked it out! Congrats you guys! And I can't wait to shoot your wedding next Spring!

Project Hope Launch!

Project Hope

Project Hope has been something that has been running around inside me for the past 6 months, and the more people I talk to about it the more excited I've become.

I have a huge heart for women that are waiting for their men to come home, and women that want to see their dreams come true but lack the finances. Here is where Project Hope comes in. So far, for 2010, I've had 3 brides postpone their weddings due to either finances or their fiance being deployed... and I want to help.

On February 14th, I (along with a panel) will be choosing a couple for a (basically) free or low cost wedding. You'll at least be getting the photography (me) for free! If you're fiance is deployed you don't have to have a date set yet, if you are a bride that comes from a low income family you need to have at least a time of year in mind.

Here are the stipulations:

1. You must be engaged by Dec 25th
2. You must come from a low income family, have a low income household, your fiance must be currently deployed or your fiance must be deployed before Jan 1.
3. Your family and fiance's family must be reachable for interviews

4. Clients that have already signed contracts are not eligible

5. Application deadline is Dec 25th.

Just to forewarn you... this is going to be a lengthy process with rounds of eliminations, as well as interviews.

The Top 10 will be chosen by Jan 1, Top 5 by Feb 1 and the final winner will be chosen on Valentines Day!

Our First Child...

So I would like everyone to meet our first child... Ngenzi. Please forgive the smatters of nonsense through this blog, but I'm writing through tears...

Do you ever have those moments... the moments when you realize that you may have it bad, but not as bad as you thought? That was me over the weekend. Doug West, a Compassion International Child Advocate, came to our church on Sunday and spoke about his own experiences with sponsoring a child in Africa. It wasn't until this moment that forgotten memories came to the surface.

When I was growing up my parents sponsored a little boy from Rwanda. I don't remember his name, but I remember writing him and sending him a soccer ball every year for his birthday. Whenever we wanted to send Compassion money to buy him something (because that's how it works :), my Mom & Dad made us take money out of our allowance/savings like we would for any other family member or friend. This boy wasn't just someone that my Mom & Dad sponsored, he was apart of our family.

I've changed my language about this boy... Ngenzi isn't a child I'm sponsoring... he's a child I've adopted. In my heart, he's my kid... I want to take care of him and make sure he has a better life. The high school kids I used to work with will tell you this... they were my kids. I took care of them, and I promise to take care of this little boy. If I don't, who will?

We have so much compared to other nations, and we have the opportunity to help in a real and tangible way. Compassion is an organization focused on relieving poverty one child at a time, and they have a real and true cause with real and true results. We hear so many times about the charity work that celebrities do... You may not receive world wide accolades, or notoriety; but you will change the life of a little boy or girl in a way that will be unforgettable to them. If you have $40/mo, or even if you don't... investing in a child is so much better than going out to eat on a Friday night.

Men at Chess

Yesterday I was sitting at Starbucks in Raleigh waiting for Lisa and Kirk to arrive for their engagement session... and stumbled upon this...

My immediate thought was "This is adorable." And of course my second thought was... "Where is my camera?" So, I ran outside to the car, grabbed my camera and came back in and snuck a few shots.

But here's what hit me today... Because of the things that have happened in my life I count the word "friend" something priceless and treasured. The people that I call "friend" I know that I can trust with my raw emotions, and can help me weed them down to something more manageable. These are the people that I can share my hopes & dreams with, and they won't tell me to get my head out of the clouds. These are the people that I will cherish for life. That I will play chess with when I'm 80 (if I ever remember how to play).

To all of my friends... I love you. Thank you for being trustworthy and a confidant. I will hold you dear in my heart and in my life until kingdom come.

Rachel Fesko 007 - License to Shoot (not kill)

So... I've been obsessed with James Bond since I was 10. I have the normal hang ups - Sean Connery was the best, Timothy Dalton was a waste of time and Pierce Brosnan will ever be the picture of Bond in my mind. That is until the wonderful, beautiful and ultimately gorgeous Daniel Craig graced the screen with his presence and stole my ever Bond loving heart. But, I have never wished to be a Bond girl... I just want to be Bond. I want to speak 4 languages, be mysteriously intriguing, carry a Walther PPK... the list goes on and on.

If you are or have been one of my clients you come to understand that breaking onto property, hopping fences and "No Trespassing" signs mean absolutely nothing to me. My motto? "It's always better to ask for forgiveness than permission." If I see the perfect place for the perfect shot... I want to get it.

Along with my love of Bond and desire to become a spy... I have the desire for certain objects... Like a car that can drive via remote control:

And I won't tell you that my parents had to take extra measures to keep me out of their house when I moved out and forgot my key :).

Jennifer & Russ' E-Sesh! - Love in Action

It was February 13th, and she was single. It was a crowded night at the bar, and her girlfriends were protesting Valentine's Day along with the rest of the single population at Whiskey River that night. Her friend continued to be pursued by a less honorable opponent, but quiet and in the background stood Russ. He had been watching Jennifer, trying to see if she was open enough to talk to... and then it happened... his moment of opportunity... A dance contest. He grabbed Jennifer's hand, ran up on stage and they took 1st place. It's been love ever since.

Russ and Jennifer are two amazingly gorgeous people... inside and out. They've had to postpone their wedding three times because Russ was being deployed, and then he wasn't... and now he is again. It breaks my heart to see this couple torn apart, and the not knowing what's going to happen on the side of the world. To all of our men in action: you have my prayers... To all of the girls waiting back home: you have my hope.

Reaction vs. Response

I have recently encountered the positive through the negative. How is this possible? Through constructive criticism, my friends, criticism.

When I was working full-time (or even part-time) I was constantly seeking out my supervisors for their insights on my performance, and what I could improve upon. I sought out their criticism because I wanted to be a better employee, and you don't know what to fix unless someone tells you... normally.

When you're running your own business you don't have a boss to report to. You report to yourself, which is sometimes worse, and hope that in watching others or asking how others do their business you can better your own.

Recently, I was sought after and sat down. What ensued was not a "bash Rachel session" but instead an opportunity for me to see how I conduct my business through someone else's eyes. The things they brought to my attention were valid, and I am the LAST person to denounce anyone's insight. Now, if they had sat me down and yelled at me for an hour, this would be a different story. But I walked away feeling like they actually cared about me, and my business (a great lesson for me in how to approach people).

But here is where most people stop and get offended or brush it off... this is reacting. I had two choices with the insight and criticism they gave me - I could get hurt and react, or I could take it in and respond. Reacting takes no thought whatsoever, and it's what you're first inclined to do - get angry, defend, depressed, shut down, etc. But responding takes a depth of character to look at your circumstances from someone else's perspective, apologize and then change the things that need to change. You may be hurt in the moment, but if someone brings opportunities for growth to your attention, why not take it in and evaluate the validity of their words and the motive of their heart?

Criticism is hard. Period. None of us like to be picked apart, especially if you're like me and you do it to yourself all the time anyway. But here is my challenge... ask one of your trusted friends, colleagues or even your supervisor for criticism on your character, performance or otherwise and see how you respond. You may get some of the best insight as to what you can do to improve, and if you respond well it may make all the difference in that relationship. Criticism is the mirror you sometimes never have the opportunity to look into.
